For the evaluation of future aircraft architectures or novel technologies, a well-understood and sound reference to compare to is essential to prove the impact of intended changes. A reference aircraft serves as a basis for calibration of the aircraft and is used as a starting point for subsequent investigations, sensitivity studies or optimizations. The prime need for such a reference arose from the European Clean-Sky-2 project HLFC-Win (Hybrid Laminar Flow Control—Wing), where no industrial reference data for a conventional aircraft were available. The project investigates a HLFC system integrated into the wing aiming to reduce the wing drag and consequently reducing the fuel consumption.

“We describe the aerodynamic design of an HLFC system for the wing of a large transport aircraft and compare it to the the HLFC system installed in the VTP of the DLR A320 ATRA aircraft. For the VTP we used the ALTTA-design with a laser-drilled microperforated titanium sheet with only one microperforation and small suction chambers beneath it. For the wing we designed a system with only one large plenum and controlled the suction with the help of variable microperforation. Some specific challenges of an HLFC design on a wing in contrast to a VTP application are highlighted here.”

Hybrid Laminar Flow Control on A320 Fin: Evaluation with the eN-method

A flight test with a simplified HLFC system on the vertical tail plane of an A320 aircraft was performed in April/May 2018. In this paper the preparation of the flight test data for evaluation with linear stability theory on the basis of sample measurements is discussed. Then, the correlated transition N-factors are presented and compared them with the results of the A320 flight tests of 1998. (source: https://arc.aiaa.org/doi/abs/10.2514/6.2021-1305)

Design, test and demonstration of an inverter for HLFC compressor applications utilizing a Model-Based Systems Engineering approach

Hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC) is an aircraft technology with the potential to reduce fuel consumption by actively sucking air from the boundary layer on the leading edge, thus increasing laminar flow length and decreasing drag. Especially in the context of a greener aviation and possible new fuels, such as hydrogen or bio fuels, saving fuel becomes increasingly important. Within the Clean Sky 2 program, this technology is investigated for the main wing (HLFC-Win project) and for the horizontal tailplane (ECHO project). In both projects, the compressor and the corresponding inverter are key components in order to ensure the HLFC functionality.
